So what’s the answer? It could be a variety of answers; I am what I do, I am what I’m known for, I am what I’m capable of, I am what I’ve achieved, I am what I possess, I am what I earn, I am any number of things!

I’ve been challenged recently to think about how much of my identity is wrapped up in external things; I’m a husband, a father, a leader but here’s the thing; to God I am first and foremost a human ‘being’ not a human ‘doing’. In the famous story of the prodigal son we always think it’s about the son who ran away and how the father welcomed him home. But when Jesus told the story he was telling it religious people who never ‘ran away’ they were very, very good people and the son who ran way was very, very bad.

The thing is this; all the Father wanted was to have his sons in his home in relationship with Him, He just wanted to be with them. The saddest person in the story is the elder brother, he only really wanted what his father could give him just like the younger son. He tried to shape his identity by what he did, ‘I have never disobeyed you,’ he said.

The father had to step outside for both his sons and invite them into His home. He still does the same for me…..for us…..for you…..’who do you think you are?’ You’re a son or daughter loved by the Father whether you’ve very, very bad or very, very good He invites you into His home, there’s a party, come on in!

My First Blog

What a week! 20 years ago history was made; I can remember it really well (I’m older than you thought) seeing those faces climbing on the wall and as brick by brick the wall was torn down and the look of freedom, relief, joy on the faces of people was overwhelming. History was being made and just a few years earlier who would have believed it? That the might of communism in Europe could fall in such a way seemed unbelievable. As I’ve thought this week about the fall of the Berlin wall I’ve thought, ‘when you’re making history do you know it at the time?’ perhaps not.

Then there was the story of the guy who wrote a book detailing all the significant historical events of the 80’s but finished it just a few days before the fall of the Berlin wall!!! Is that irony?! If you’re part of the community of people called Zion church, you know what this week is…right? Did you know that Sunday is...!

You know that we’re on the verge of making history through our sacrificial giving to see The Third Place built. This will be a facility that will serve the community, provide space for growth, be a landmark for the town and be a statement that ‘God is not dead nor does he sleep!’ We’re making history, we may not know it but whatever we do, let’s not miss it. Let’s not close the book now before the main event. Let’s not put our pen down before we write the next chapter. Then when Sunday comes and goes, let’s pick up the pen again and write some more history...

We believe we can see change in our society, in our nation; but it doesn’t just happen it takes faith, courage, hard work, perseverance and above all, people.

By the way this is also a history making week for another reason…this is the first blog I’ve ever written!!
